Boultham

When we first started to look around Boultham Park we were a bit skeptical due to how small the woods were, maybe not much here? How we were wrong. Talking to people who pass us in the woods, the Park and along the river they have said to us to come early morning you’ll see a muntjac and further along towards town people have spotted kingfisher and Roe deer.

The first trip on my own i was pleasantly surprised to see lots fluttering about me i didn’t know which way to look. It was full of wildlife. I spotted a little area up a dirt track saw a log i could sit on get set up to take shots of what was around me. Blue Tits, Great tits, long tailed tits, Robin and a full family of them, Jays, Crows, Woodpeckers, Wrens, Goldcrest have been heard, Coal tits, Sparrows, Treecreeper and even a Nuthatch. I had heard from someone else a bird spotter that there has been a sighting of a male Bullfinch but I have never seen one or heard one. I could have stayed in this little area for ages feeding these beautiful birds but after an hour I had more than enough photos. So moved on to the river which just runs off the edge of the woods. This is a very good for sighting kingfishers. Herons, Cormorants, Moorhens, Coots with their young and it’s certainly a nice area to capture Buzzards and Kestrels hovering.

Still absolutely in awe of everything we see out here and it backs on to a busy main area of the outer city of Lincoln. The river Witham is popular with dog walkers and people walking to and from work especially to cut out the noisy rush hour so you can take this path and it will lead you to the City Centre. We’ve often seen on Sunday mornings Canoes and Paddle boards on the river which is lovely to watch and to take photographs. The catchwater drain that runs along side of it is where we would sometimes see Kingfishers, we have spotted 2 before but with them being so damn fast its not easy getting a decent shot of them. With their vibrant blues you’d think it would be easy to spot them but they are very small and camouflage very well into the bushes.

As we carry on around to the other side of the Bridge the river Witham carries on way past all the factories, houses, pub at the far end and flats. On the other side there are some fields it is nice to look over as sometimes a cheeky dinosaur like bird likes to feed there.. The Heron, what we both call the hungry Heron. We’ve heard lots of rustling in the bushes like Voles, Moles Rats, Mice etc. So we decide to walk on..

Around the lake towards where the children’s park is. It is a very well looked after lake and a nice area as the grounds are a very decent size including a bandstand. This area gets used a lot for events, dog shows, summer fair, yoga lessons and every Saturday morning it’s the Parkrun. We often see Cormorants up in the trees around the lake, Mute swans constantly chasing off Geese when they get too close to their young, Coots bringing up their young, lots of Mallard ducks male and females with their ducklings, The odd Wren singing away near the stream which runs through the middle. Some days you can see loads here other days hardly see anything. One day and the only time we saw on the lake was a Goosander as it’s shallow here.

Goosanders needs deeper lake it didn’t hang around for long. Lake takes us roughly about half an hour or so to walk round longer if we stop frequently to look for wildlife and see lots happening on the lake. At the top of the lake looking back from the main road is a wooden platform with gates they sometimes use this for Bringing in the boats. Which is a lovely contribution towards how pretty this place is. Swans nest on the island in the middle so when it comes to the events they usually stay out of the way. We enjoy looking around Boultham Park however in the winter or when we get heavy rain it can flood and woods towards the end of the park some areas get affected by the floods too.
